Should I handle AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been making a funny, damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’ve just spotted a patch of black and green speckles in the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried it’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in. How urgently do I need to get a professional to look at this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

The damp smell and visible mold growth indicate an active moisture problem, which is common in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots. More importantly, it can be hazardous in an enclosed space and may release harmful spores into the air.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the real issue is rarely just the visible spot. The smell from your AC strongly suggests mold is also growing inside the unit or the ductwork, which you cannot safely access or clean yourself. This internal contamination will continue to spread spores throughout the room.

Given you're in a villa with a dedicated AC system, the problem is likely systemic. You need a professional inspection to identify the full extent of the growth and the source of the moisture—often a clogged condensate drain line or inadequate insulation causing condensation. A proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and addressing the root cause to prevent immediate recurrence. For health safety and a lasting solution, a professional assessment is strongly advised.
