Black mold in closet causing kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since we got back from summer vacation, and I just found a bunch of black spots in the closet of our master bedroom in Jumeirah. Our maid mentioned the dehumidifier in there broke a couple of months ago and it's been feeling damp. Is this likely the cause of their coughs and should I get a professional to test it?

Based on the details you've shared, it is highly likely that the mold growth in your closet and your children's persistent coughs are connected. The broken dehumidifier leading to a damp environment created the perfect conditions for mold spores to flourish, which is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where condensation can accumulate quickly, especially in enclosed spaces without proper ventilation.

Black spots are a serious concern and should be treated as potentially hazardous until properly identified. The constant inhalation of mold spores and mycotoxins is a known irritant that commonly causes upper respiratory symptoms like coughing, congestion, and sore throats, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing. Since the symptoms started upon your return, it's probable they are reacting to the high concentration of spores that built up in the stagnant air while you were away.

You should arrange for a professional inspection and lab test. A certified inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific species of mold, which determines the actual health risk and the necessary remediation protocol. This is not a situation for DIY cleaning with bleach, as improper handling can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem.

For remediation, look for a provider that follows IICRC S520 standards, uses containment procedures, and, most importantly, provides verifiable before-and-after lab reports to confirm the spore count has been returned to a safe level. Addressing the source of the moisture—repairing or replacing the dehumidifier and improving airflow—is critical to prevent it from returning.
