Should we treat this bedroom mold immediately or wait?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of dark, speckled spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom ceiling, right near the AC vent. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago, and my wife has started waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. Is this something we need to get treated like, immediately, or can it wait until the weekend for a professional to look at?

That pattern of dark spots near the AC vent, worsening with high humidity and causing morning congestion, strongly suggests active mould growth. Given the symptoms and its location, this should be addressed promptly and not left until the weekend.

The immediate risk is to your wife's health; consistent morning stuffiness is a classic sign of mould exposure. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation, mould colonies can expand quickly. The vent's location indicates your AC system may be spreading spores throughout the room each time it cycles on.

For now, avoid disturbing the area. Do not attempt to wipe or spray it yourself, as this can aerosolize a high number of spores. Keep the bedroom door closed to contain the spread and ensure the AC is set to a reasonable temperature to minimize condensation.

You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source—likely a condensate drain line leak or insulation issue inside the AC duct—and to test the mould type. While the term "black mould" is alarming, many dark-coloured species are common here; only lab analysis can confirm the specific type and potential health risks. A proper remediation plan will fix the water problem first, then safely remove the contaminated materials. Delaying could allow it to spread into the ceiling cavity or AC unit itself, making remediation more involved.
