How to fix black mold in Dubai bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

The corner of our master bedroom closet, which backs onto the outside wall, is completely covered in black mold. I think it might be from a slow leak in the AC unit or maybe just the humidity. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it while pulling out our winter clothes. What's the best way to handle this properly and who should I call for a permanent fix in Dubai?

Black mold in a closet backing onto an outside wall is a common issue in Dubai, primarily due to the high humidity and temperature differentials causing condensation. Your suspicion of an AC leak or humidity is likely correct.

For a proper fix, the source of moisture must be identified and stopped. This is not a simple surface cleaning job. The first step is to call a professional mold inspector with a microbiology lab to conduct an assessment. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact source—be it a leaking AC condensate drain line, inadequate wall insulation, or infiltration from the outside. They should also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, as some species require specific remediation protocols.

Once the source is identified, you'll need two types of professionals. A licensed AC technician should repair any leaks in the HVAC system. Then, a certified mold remediation company should handle the removal. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation, and thoroughly treating the area. Merely spraying bleach or vinegar is ineffective and can worsen airborne spore dispersal.

For a permanent solution, ensure the company provides a post-remediation verification (PRV) report, which includes lab results confirming spore counts are back to normal levels. This is the only way to verify the job was done correctly. Always request to see their certifications and ask for a detailed scope of work before proceeding.
