Black mold on leather items from humid closet? Clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started showing small black spots on the leather shoes and bags I stored there. I first noticed it about a week ago, and the room has felt more humid than usual since they turned the central AC off for the building's annual maintenance. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a store-bought spray, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to check for a bigger issue?

This is likely surface mold from the recent spike in humidity, a common issue in Dubai after AC is turned off. The mold is feeding on organic materials in the leather and dust. You can attempt to clean the items yourself if the growth is minor.

First, take the items outside to prevent spreading spores indoors. Use a soft brush to gently remove the dry mold. Then, wipe the leather with a cloth lightly dampened with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water. Test this on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't damage the finish. Allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated, dry area before even considering returning them to the closet.

However, this only treats the symptom, not the cause. The real issue is the elevated humidity inside that closet. This is a red flag for potential condensation within the wall cavity, especially if it's an external wall. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source, which could be a small leak or insufficient insulation. They can use moisture meters to check the walls, which is crucial for preventing structural damage and a larger mold problem. Simply cleaning the items and running a dehumidifier is a temporary fix. For valuable leather goods, a professional assessment can save you from costly damage down the line.
