Black mold in shower spreading; need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has turned completely black, and I’m starting to see little black spots on the ceiling above it too. This seemed to get way worse over the last few weeks with the humidity. I’m in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m really worried it’s spreading behind the walls. What’s the most effective way to kill this for good in our climate, and should I call a professional company like ServiceMarket right away?

That black growth is likely Cladosporium or Aureobasidium, two molds extremely common in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers. The appearance on the ceiling confirms it's airborne, so yes, there is a possibility it has spread into the wall cavity, especially if the grout is cracked or the silicone sealant has failed.

For a small, surface-level issue, a thorough cleaning with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner (not just bleach) can be effective. You must fix the source of moisture first; ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working correctly and runs for at least 20 minutes after each shower.

However, given its spread to the ceiling and your location in a villa where the structure is your responsibility, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls for hidden growth, which is a common problem here. Remediation for established growth behind tiles is not a DIY job.

For verification, look for a company that provides a lab analysis to identify the mold type and a detailed post-remediation verification report, not just a visual inspection. This is the standard for proper remediation in the UAE.
