How to remove black mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s in the corner of our villa in Jumeirah that always feels a bit damp, especially after running the AC non-stop during the summer. We had a small leak from the upstairs bathroom a few months ago and I'm worried it wasn't properly dried out. What is the most effective way to treat this myself and what can I do to stop it from ever coming back?

Black mold growth behind furniture in a humid corner is a common issue in Dubai villas, often stemming from a prior leak and exacerbated by condensation from constant AC use. The damp feeling indicates persistent moisture, which is the root cause.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan; simply wiping it is not enough.

To prevent its return, you must address the moisture source. The previous leak may have soaked the wall's internal structure, which can take months to dry without professional intervention. Move the sofa away from the wall to improve air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in that room, as AC alone often doesn't control humidity sufficiently. Check that your AC unit is not set too cold, as extreme temperature differences between the cold air and the warm wall can cause significant condensation, creating the dampness you feel.

Given the connection to your children's coughing and the history of a leak, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters to detect hidden dampness inside walls that isn't visible and can confirm if the leak repair was effective. For health assurance, a lab test can identify the mold species. Recurring mold is a sign of an unresolved moisture problem that typically requires professional drying and remediation to solve permanently.
