What's the best product to kill black shower mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners. It’s been getting worse over the last few weeks since the humidity really kicked in. I keep wiping it down, but it just comes back darker. What is the most effective product I can find here in Dubai to kill this for good and stop it from returning?

The black discoloration in your shower grout is likely Cladosporium or Aureobasidium—mould species common in Dubai's humid climate that feed on soap scum and moisture. Standard cleaning often just bleaches the surface, leaving the root structure intact inside the porous grout, which is why it returns stronger.

For a DIY approach, a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner (3-10% concentration) or a distilled white vinegar solution is effective and readily available. Apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub with a stiff brush. Crucially, you must fix the underlying moisture issue. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and squeegee the walls to remove standing water. A small dehumidifier can also help manage the ambient humidity that AC alone often doesn't control.

If the mould returns quickly after thorough cleaning or covers an area larger than one square meter, the issue may be deeper within the wall or behind the tiles. In these cases, professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify any hidden leaks, as persistent mould in bathrooms can indicate compromised sealant or insulation. A lab test can confirm the species, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation protocol if it's a more resistant type.
