Is bathroom mold an urgent fix for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks back. I finally pulled out the wicker laundry hamper today and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots spreading on the wall behind it. With the kids using that bathroom, I’m getting worried. How quickly do I need to get a professional in to handle this, is it a fix-it-this-weekend emergency?

It's understandable to be concerned, especially with kids involved. The urgency is high, but not necessarily a middle-of-the-night emergency. Given the climate, mold growth won't resolve itself and will likely worsen.
For a contained area like a bathroom wall behind furniture, immediate action you can take this weekend is to clean the visible mold with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. However, this is a temporary measure. The critical step is identifying and rectifying the moisture source, which is often hidden condensation within the wall or a small leak. In Dubai's humidity, simply wiping the surface mold away will not prevent its return without addressing the root cause. For a child's bathroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the hidden dampness you can't see, ensuring the remediation is complete and not just superficial. This prevents the problem from recurring and spreading into wall cavities, which becomes a much larger issue. A certified inspector can also identify the mold species, which is important for assessing potential health risks, particularly for those with allergies or asthma. You should aim to have it assessed within the week. Until then, ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated after showers, and consider moving the hamper to a drier location to allow the area to breathe. |
