How to clean mold in closet or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of dark, fuzzy spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and the room always feels a bit damp. What is the most effective way for me to clean this myself, or is this a job where I absolutely have to call the building management?

The dark, fuzzy spots you're describing are almost certainly mould, likely fuelled by the dampness on that external wall. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue where cool, air-conditioned interiors meet the humid external air, causing condensation inside walls, especially in closets with poor air circulation.

For a small, isolated patch, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A simple solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, but the key is to dry it completely immediately after with a fan or dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, given that the dampness is coming from the wall itself and the room consistently feels humid, this is likely a building envelope or insulation issue. Simply cleaning the surface mould will not solve the underlying moisture problem; it will return.

This is a situation where involving building management is strongly advised. Dubai Law No. 6 of 2019 and the Dubai Strata Law place the responsibility for the maintenance of the main structure, including external walls and common property infrastructure, on the Owners' Association or building management. They are obligated to address the source of the moisture intrusion, which is their responsibility, not just the visible symptom. A professional inspection can verify if the issue is condensation or a more serious leak.
