Should I clean bedroom closet mold or fix AC first?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit, and now I’ve spotted black mold on the back wall and some of our shoes. We keep the apartment pretty cool, but I’m worried the humidity is making it worse, especially with the recent weather. What’s the best way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading, and should I get my building’s maintenance to look at the AC unit first?

Address the AC leak first. The mold growth is a symptom of excess moisture, and cleaning without fixing the source will only provide a temporary solution. The continuous condensation from a leaking unit in Dubai's high humidity will cause the mold to return quickly.

Contact your building maintenance immediately to repair the AC leak. This is typically the building's responsibility under Dubai's common property regulations. While waiting for them, you can carefully clean the visible mold on non-porous surfaces like the wall with a solution of diluted detergent. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For porous items like shoes, cleaning may not be sufficient to remove the root structure, and they may need to be discarded if the mold growth is extensive.

Once the AC is repaired, the area must be thoroughly dried. However, if the mold covers more than one square meter or has penetrated porous materials like drywall, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Hidden mold inside the AC unit or wall cavity is a common issue here. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes air or surface sampling, can determine the full extent of the contamination and the required remediation steps to ensure your indoor air quality is restored.
