Safest DIY mold removal for kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’ve just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Deira and with the recent humidity, it feels damp all the time. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this myself without putting my family at risk?

The black mold you've found is likely Stachybotrys, which produces mycotoxins that can cause persistent respiratory issues like the coughing you're describing, especially in children. With Dubai's high humidity and older Deira buildings prone to dampness from condensation and AC drain issues, this is a common but serious problem.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt careful removal. First, isolate the area—keep the kids and anyone with asthma or immune issues completely away. Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and safety goggles. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is effective against many mold types and is less harsh than bleach. Lightly mist the patch to dampen it and prevent spores from aerosolizing, then scrub with a disposable cloth. Place all cleaning materials in a sealed bag for disposal.

Do not use bleach, as it can release harmful fumes and only bleaches the mold without killing the root in porous surfaces. After cleaning, run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is set to a lower humidity mode to keep the space dry.

However, surface cleaning often doesn't address the underlying moisture source, which is likely hidden condensation or a small leak in the wall. The mold you see is frequently just the visible part of a larger colony. For a child's bedroom and given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the wall cavity and HVAC system for cross-contamination. In the UAE, proper remediation includes containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment, followed by post-remediation verification testing from an independent lab to confirm the space is safe. This is the only way to be certain the mycotoxin source is gone.
