How to permanently remove black mold from humid bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. The air here is so humid, and I'm worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. What’s the most effective way to not only clean this but to stop it from coming back for good?

Permanent removal requires fixing the moisture source, not just cleaning the visible growth. In Dubai's climate, that closet's exterior wall is likely a cold surface where humid air condenses, creating the damp environment mold needs. Simply wiping it will only provide a temporary solution.

First, address the humidity. Ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the air, even when the room is unoccupied. Use a hygrometer to monitor the closet's humidity; aim to keep it below 60%. A small, portable dehumidifier or a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier bag inside the closet can help manage localized moisture.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small patch, scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces. Afterwards, the area must be dried completely.

The most critical step is investigating why moisture is accumulating on that wall. The issue could be inadequate insulation on the exterior wall (a common villa trait), a small hidden leak from piping, or insufficient AC airflow into the closet space. For a recurring problem on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact condensation source and propose remediation, which may involve improving ventilation or adding insulation.

Without addressing this root cause, the mold will almost certainly return. A certified inspector can use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the problem areas hidden from view.
