How to clean black mold in closet and check external wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It's been extra humid the last few weeks and I think the closet, which is always stuffed with clothes, doesn't have enough air circulation. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be calling the building management to check the external wall?

Black mold in a closet on an external wall is a common issue here due to high humidity and temperature differences causing condensation. Your assessment of poor air circulation is likely correct.

For a small patch you can manage yourself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to four parts water; vinegar is effective on many common surface molds. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push the mold deeper into porous materials like drywall. Scrub the area gently, let it dry completely, and improve air circulation by leaving the closet doors open and using a dehumidifier or a fan.

You should absolutely inform building management. In the UAE, landlords and building owners are responsible for the structural integrity of the property. The mold on the external wall could indicate a hidden leak in the building envelope or failing insulation, which is a structural issue they must investigate and repair. Without addressing the root cause, the mold will return.

If the patch is larger than one square meter, has a persistent musty odor, or returns after cleaning, professional inspection is advised to assess potential spread behind the walls. A lab analysis can identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For now, moving the clothes away from that wall is a critical first step.
