How to permanently prevent mold in a steamy bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I finally found black spots growing along the grout between the wall tiles. It’s the bathroom my two kids use, so they take long, hot showers that leave the whole room steamy for hours. I wipe it down, but it keeps coming back. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold from returning for good?

The key is controlling humidity, which is a constant battle in Dubai's climate. After hot showers, run the exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes to remove steam. If your fan is weak or you don't have one, installing a properly sized model is the single most effective upgrade. Wipe down wet walls, the shower screen, and tiles with a squeegee immediately after use—this removes the water mold needs to grow.

Improving air circulation is critical. Keep the bathroom door open after showering to allow moist air to dissipate. If possible, crack a window. For persistent cases, a small desiccant dehumidifier can be used to actively pull moisture from the air. Check that your apartment's AC system is functioning correctly, as proper dehumidification throughout the unit helps manage overall humidity levels.

For the existing mold on grout, a thorough cleaning is needed. Scrub with a dedicated grout brush and a cleaning solution appropriate for the surface. Avoid excessive bleach, which can damage grout and only lightens mold superficially without killing the roots. Once completely clean and dry, applying a high-quality grout sealer can create a protective barrier against moisture penetration.

If the mold returns quickly despite these consistent measures, the issue may be more systemic. Hidden moisture behind tiles or within the wall from a slow leak is a common problem. In such cases, a professional inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the hidden source, which must be resolved for a permanent solution.
