Can I clean moldy AC ducts myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I'm starting to suspect the AC unit in our Jumeirah villa. I pulled the vent cover off and the inside of the duct looks dark and fuzzy. I'm wondering if I can just clean this myself with some bleach spray or if this is serious enough that I need to call one of those professional mold inspection companies here in Dubai?

Visible mold growth inside AC ducts, especially with health symptoms present, warrants professional assessment. Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold, particularly in villa systems with extensive ductwork that can spread spores throughout your home.
For limited surface mold on a non-porous vent cover, you can clean it yourself. Remove the cover, scrub with a detergent solution, then disinfect with a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), ensuring good ventilation. However, cleaning just the visible cover is insufficient if the duct interior is fuzzy. Disturbing it with DIY methods often releases a large cloud of spores, potentially worsening your family's exposure and coughing. Professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They use containment procedures and specialized equipment to assess the entire system without cross-contamination. The dark fuzzy growth suggests a established colony, and with children experiencing symptoms, identification of the mold type is important. Lab analysis of a sample, which reputable inspectors provide, determines if it's a common irritant or a species requiring more targeted remediation. This is the most reliable way to resolve the root cause and protect your indoor air quality. |
