Mold found in Dubai home, how to clean and treat symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting awful headaches. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it, probably from a slow leak in the AC condensation pipe. What’s the fastest and safest way to get this professionally cleaned and tested here in Dubai, and should we see a specific type of doctor about these symptoms?

Black mold growth behind furniture due to AC condensation leaks is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate. The fastest and safest approach requires professional remediation, not just cleaning.

For the mold, do not attempt to clean it yourself as this can aerosolize spores. The wall cavity likely has more hidden growth. Isolate the room by closing the door and placing a towel at the base. Contact a Dubai-based remediation company that follows IICRC standards; they will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to remove the contaminated materials and spores safely. The underlying cause—the AC condensate drain leak—must be repaired by your AC technician to prevent immediate recurrence.

For testing, a post-remediation verification (PRV) test is essential. This is an air quality test conducted by a third-party company to confirm spore counts inside the containment are now at acceptable levels. Some firms, like ours with an in-house microbiology lab, can provide this specific clearance testing to verify the home is safe.

Regarding symptoms, consult a doctor and explicitly mention the mold exposure. A general practitioner can assess your family and may refer you to an allergist or pulmonologist. They can determine if the persistent cough and headaches are allergic reactions or require further treatment. Keep the kids out of the affected room until remediation and verification are complete.
