Black mold spreading on damp interior wall: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe. It's on the interior wall that faces the garden, and the room has felt really damp lately despite the AC running constantly. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should we call a professional company right away?

That black spot pattern spreading on an interior wall is a strong indicator of a persistent moisture issue, common in Dubai villas. The damp feeling despite AC running points to high humidity or a hidden leak.

For a small patch (less than one square foot), you can attempt DIY. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Clean the area with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill mould roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Dry the surface completely. However, since the mould is behind a wardrobe on an exterior-facing wall, the root cause is likely more serious. It could be condensation from a cold bridge in the wall, a leak from internal plumbing, or water ingress from the garden side.

In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible mould without identifying and rectifying the source will result in its immediate return. The high humidity will guarantee it. For a recurring or spreading case like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden water source, which is the only way to achieve a lasting solution. Reputable firms will provide a detailed report with lab-verified identification of the mould type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol.
