How to permanently remove mold from closet shelves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten way worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without ruining the built-in shelves?

That black mold on an exterior wall is a classic Dubai issue, caused by thermal bridging. The outside heat meets your air-conditioned interior, creating condensation inside the wall cavity. The high humidity we've had is providing the perfect fuel for its spread.

For a permanent fix, surface cleaning alone won't work. You must address the moisture source. Start by moving everything out of the closet to assess the full extent. For the shelves themselves, a solution of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover can clean the surface. Test any cleaner on a hidden area first to ensure it doesn't damage the finish.

However, the critical step is treating the wall behind and likely inside it. The mold you see is often just the fruiting body; the root system can be deep within the plasterboard. Scrubbing the surface will leave it to regrow. For a small area, you can carefully scrub the wall with a borax solution, but the wall may need to be cut out and replaced if the infiltration is severe.

Given its location on an exterior wall and the rapid spread, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact condensation point within the wall. The only permanent solution is to rectify that thermal bridge, which may involve adding insulation or improving the vapor barrier—this is a structural fix.

Until the root cause is fixed, consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel packs in the closet to help control the local humidity level and protect your stored clothes.
