How to treat black mold in Dubai bathroom shower?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s in a Jumeirah villa and seems to have gotten worse since the weather got more humid. What’s the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

The most effective way to treat a small patch of black mold in a Dubai bathroom depends on its size and the underlying cause. For a patch smaller than one square foot, you can likely handle it yourself.
First, address the source of moisture. The recent increase in humidity is a major factor. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is working properly and run it during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee immediately after use can dramatically reduce the moisture that mold needs to grow. For the cleaning itself, wear a mask and gloves. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often effective; spray it on the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. For more stubborn mold, a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) can be used, but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated as the combination of bleach and high humidity can be harsh. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried. However, if the mold covers a larger area, if it returns quickly after cleaning, or if you notice a musty odor, the issue is likely systemic. In a Jumeirah villa, the mold growth on the ceiling corner could indicate a condensation issue within the ceiling void, often caused by poorly insulated AC ductwork. This is a common problem in the local climate where cold air conditioning meets hot, humid air. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture sources and assess the full extent. Surface cleaning alone won't solve a deeper condensation or leak problem. A proper assessment can determine if remediation is needed behind the walls or in the ceiling. |
