Black mold in closet: professional treatment and clothes disposal?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s been worse since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago. I’m really worried about our health and the stuff in there. What’s the fastest way to get this professionally treated and should we throw out all the clothes that were touching the wall?

Black mold in closets is common here due to Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer. The enclosed space with poor airflow and condensation from AC units creates an ideal environment for it to grow.

For a spread this significant, professional remediation is strongly advised. The fastest way is to contact a company with certified mold inspectors who can conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping to find the source. Reputable providers will then contain the area, use HEPA filtration to remove spores from the air, and physically remove the contaminated materials. They should provide a clearance test from an independent lab to verify the space is safe. Look for companies that follow IICRC S520 standards, which is the industry benchmark for proper remediation.

Regarding your clothes, do not automatically throw everything out. Washable items that were only lightly exposed can typically be salvaged with a hot wash cycle. For dry-clean-only items or those that were in direct, prolonged contact, a professional restoration cleaner can assess and ozone-treat them. Discard only items that are visibly contaminated and cannot be effectively cleaned, like porous cardboard boxes.

Until the pros arrive, keep the closet closed to avoid disturbing the spores and reduce the room's humidity by running your AC continuously or using a dehumidifier.
