Can I clean mold in my AC vent myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor, and I just found patches of black and green fuzzy stuff inside the vent in my master bedroom. It's been crazy humid the last few weeks. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

For a small, visible patch of surface mold on a vent cover, you can clean it yourself. Turn the AC off, wear an N95 mask and gloves, remove the vent cover, and clean it with a detergent solution outdoors. Avoid bleach; it doesn't prevent regrowth and its fumes in an enclosed AC system can be problematic.
However, if the mold is inside the ductwork, extensive, or has a strong musty odor, DIY cleaning is insufficient. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to root deep in the system, where wiping the surface won't reach. Disturbing it can also spread spores throughout your apartment. In these cases, a professional inspection is needed to assess the contamination level inside the unit and ducts. They use containment methods and industrial-grade HEPA vacuuming to remove the colony safely. For health safety, especially with black mold or if household members have respiratory issues, this is the recommended approach. A company with its own microbiology lab can also identify the species to determine the actual risk level. |
