Is black mold behind wardrobe an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and we can't figure out why, until I just moved the wardrobe in their bedroom and found a patch of black mold on the wall behind it. We live in an older villa in Al Barsha and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold inspection, or is this something I can handle myself first?

The presence of black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) behind a wardrobe, especially in a child's bedroom, constitutes an urgent health risk that requires immediate professional attention. The persistent coughing you describe is a classic symptom of mold spore exposure, which can lead to more severe respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and chronic health problems, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

In Dubai's climate, this situation is unfortunately common. The combination of high ambient humidity and the constant use of air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials. This leads to condensation forming on and within walls, especially behind large furniture pieces like wardrobes that restrict air circulation. The organic materials in the wall (e.g., gypsum board, wallpaper adhesive) then become a perfect food source for mold.

This is not a situation for DIY remediation. Disturbing the mold colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize a massive quantity of spores, drastically increasing the concentration in the air your children breathe and contaminating other areas of the home. Furthermore, what is visible is often just the "bloom" of a larger colony growing within the wall cavity.

A professional inspection is critical. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to assess the full extent of the moisture intrusion and mold growth within the wall. This investigation is guided by standards like the IICRC S520, which we adhere to for all our remediation projects in the UAE.

For the safety of your family, I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Our team at Saniservice is equipped to conduct a comprehensive inspection and provide a safe, effective remediation plan.
