Removing black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe on an exterior wall. It’s been incredibly humid the last few months and I’m worried it's spread behind the shelves. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company, and what’s the typical cost range for a job like this in Dubai?

Based on the description of your Jumeirah villa, this is a serious case that requires professional intervention. The presence of black mold on an exterior wall, combined with the high humidity we've experienced and the suspicion it has spread behind built-in structures, indicates a significant moisture issue that a DIY approach will not resolve.

Applying bleach or store-bought solutions is strongly discouraged. These are surface treatments that do not address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) of the mold growing within the wall cavity. The climate in Dubai, with its extreme humidity and reliance on year-round air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for condensation within walls, leading to systemic mold growth that is not visible. Disturbing it yourself can aerosolize harmful spores, contaminating other areas of your home and posing health risks.

According to UAE best practices and guidelines from environmental health authorities, proper remediation involves a multi-step process: first, a certified inspection (including moisture mapping and air quality testing) to determine the full extent of contamination; then, engineering controls like setting up containment barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination; followed by the safe removal of affected porous materials (drywall, insulation); and finally, a thorough hygienization of the area.

For a walk-in wardrobe of the size you describe, costs can vary based on the extent of the damage behind the walls, but you should expect a range from AED 2,500 to AED 7,000 for a comprehensive professional remediation job.

I highly recommend you cease use of the area and contact a certified professional immediately for an inspection.
