Can I remove black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckled mold spreading along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room of our Marina apartment. The musty smell has gotten worse, especially when the AC isn't running. Is this a job I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional company for a proper assessment and removal, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a room this size?

Based on the description of your Marina apartment, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection. Black speckled mold spreading along a wall, combined with a persistent musty odor that fluctuates with AC usage, strongly indicates a moisture issue that extends beyond surface condensation. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, this is often caused by a hidden source, such as a condensation leak within the AC system's ductwork or a leak from an adjacent pipe concealed within the wall.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with appropriate biocides from a hardware store, your case is different. Attempting a DIY removal on porous materials like drywall is ineffective; the mold's root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into the material, and it will almost certainly regrow. Furthermore, improper disturbance without containment and HEPA filtration can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing airborne contamination and health risks throughout your apartment.

A professional assessment is critical to identify and rectify the primary moisture source. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact origin of the problem. Remediation then involves setting up containment barriers, using negative air machines with HEPA filtration to protect your home, and safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials.

For a room of this size, a proper inspection, assessment, and remediation plan from a certified company like ours typically starts from AED 1,500 onwards, but this is highly dependent on the extent of the hidden damage. To get an accurate diagnosis and quote, I strongly recommend you call our team for a comprehensive inspection. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
