How to clean black mold from my bathroom ceiling?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Mirdif villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bathroom ceiling. The room doesn't have a window and the extractor fan is pretty weak, so I guess the steam from our showers just sits there. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai right away?

The black spots you're observing on your bathroom ceiling are almost certainly mold growth, a common issue in Dubai villas, particularly in windowless bathrooms with inadequate ventilation. The high humidity from showers, combined with our climate's ambient moisture and constant AC use creating thermal bridges, provides an ideal environment for mold. The condensation on cooler ceiling surfaces is the primary catalyst.
For a small, surface-level area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Ensure you wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not simply wipe it, as this will aerosolize spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a 3:1 water-to-white vinegar solution or a specialized, non-bleach-based mold cleaner to dampen and kill the growth. After 15 minutes, scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Seal all waste in a plastic bag. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Immediately replace the weak extractor fan with a higher-capacity unit rated for your bathroom's size and ensure it runs for at least 30 minutes after each shower. However, given the location (ceiling, likely with porous gypsum board) and the chronic nature of the moisture issue, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate the substrate, making a surface clean ineffective and leading to rapid regrowth. In the UAE, professional remediation companies like Saniservice follow strict protocols to contain the area, use HEPA filtration to remove airborne spores, and apply EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions to eliminate the colony at its root. For a proper assessment and to prevent recurring health and structural risks, it is advisable to call a professional. You can contact our certified team for an inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via hello@saniservice.com. |
