How to remove closet mold and control humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has a persistent damp smell and I’ve just found a patch of black mold on a few of our leather bags and shoes stored at the back. This started becoming noticeable a couple of months ago, right after the weather got really humid. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and what can I do to control the humidity in that specific closet to stop it from coming back?

The issue you're describing is a common one in Dubai, particularly in closets on interior walls. The combination of high ambient humidity, often exceeding 90%, and the constant cooling from your AC system creates significant temperature differentials. This leads to condensation on cooler surfaces, like the back wall of a closet, providing the perfect breeding ground for mold.
For the immediate cleanup, safety is paramount. I strongly advise against simply wiping the mold. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination. For porous materials like leather, the mold can penetrate deeply. A professional assessment is crucial to determine if these items can be salvaged with specialized biocidal cleaning or must be discarded. The most effective and safe remediation protocol involves isolation of the area with negative air pressure, HEPA vacuuming of all surfaces, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to kill the mold and inhibit regrowth. This is not a simple wipe-down. The root cause, however, is the humidity. To control it in that specific closet, I recommend three actions: First, ensure there is a slight air gap between the wall and your stored items to allow for air circulation. Second, install a compact, renewable desiccant dehumidifier unit specifically designed for closets and small spaces. Third, and most critically, have a professional evaluate your bedroom's AC system. Often, the closet is a "dead zone" with little to no airflow from the AC, allowing humidity to stagnate. A slight adjustment to the ductwork or the addition of a small vent can solve this permanently. Given the health risks associated with mold exposure and the technical requirements for proper remediation, I recommend a professional inspection.
