Black mold in kids' room: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly since the heavy dew started last week, and I’ve just spotted a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of their bedroom wall where it meets the ceiling. The room is on the side of our villa that doesn’t get much sun in Al Barsha. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company to test it?

Heavy dew and poor sun exposure in Al Barsha create a perfect environment for wall mold, which is a likely trigger for your kids' coughing. The high humidity condenses on cooler surfaces, like that shady wall-ceiling corner, feeding mold growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY clean with a vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) can be effective; bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't kill the roots. However, if the mold is widespread, has a musty odor, or has returned after a previous clean, professional assessment is strongly advised. Persistent coughing suggests potential airborne spores, which DIY cleaning can aggravate by disturbing them.

A professional inspection, backed by lab analysis of a tape-lift sample, identifies the mold species and confirms the moisture source—critical for a permanent fix, not just a surface clean. In the UAE's climate, simply wiping it away without addressing the underlying condensation issue means it will almost certainly return. They can also verify if the AC unit itself is a contributing factor, as internal mold growth is common here and can circulate spores throughout the room.
