Black mold in closet: DIY or professional with kids?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been so humid lately, and now my youngest has started with a nagging cough that won't go away, which has me really worried. What is the safest and most effective way to handle this, especially with kids in the house? Should I attempt a DIY cleanup or immediately call a professional service?

Black mold in a closet with a child's persistent cough warrants immediate caution, not DIY. The humid Dubai climate, especially with year-round AC creating condensation, creates perfect conditions for mold growth in enclosed spaces.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach may suffice. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and isolate the area. However, with a child exhibiting respiratory symptoms, the risk of airborne spores during cleaning is significantly higher. The cough suggests the mold may already be affecting indoor air quality.

Professional remediation is strongly advised here. They will contain the area with physical barriers, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely remove contaminated materials like drywall or insulation. Crucially, a certified company with its own microbiology lab can identify the mold species and verify its complete removal through post-remediation testing—this is the only way to be certain the environment is safe for your child. This approach aligns with DM and DHA guidelines for addressing indoor biological contaminants.

Until it's handled, keep the closet closed, run a dehumidifier in the bedroom, and ensure your AC unit is regularly serviced to control humidity levels.
