Mold under shower sealant: urgent professional fix or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower to find a bunch of black and green spots. We run the exhaust fan, but the humidity has been so intense lately. Should I be treating this as a major emergency to call a professional right now, or is it something I can handle myself with a cleaning product from the supermarket this weekend?

Bathroom mold under silicone sealant is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods. Whether it's a DIY fix or requires a professional depends on the extent.

For a small, contained patch (less than a square foot), you can attempt cleaning. Scrape out all the old, contaminated silicone. Clean the area thoroughly with a dedicated bathroom mold remover, ensuring the space is completely dry before applying a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant. This is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

However, if the mold has spread behind tiles, into the grout, or if the wall feels soft, it indicates a more serious moisture problem within the wall cavity. In such cases, this requires professional assessment. They can identify the source—often a hidden leak or constant condensation—and remediate it properly to prevent recurrence and potential structural damage. For an apartment, it's also wise to inform building management, as the leak source might be from a neighboring unit, which they are responsible for addressing.

Given the high humidity and constant AC use, the exhaust fan alone is often insufficient. Wiping down wet surfaces after showers and using a dehumidifier can significantly help control moisture.
