Professional mold remediation needed for large bedroom closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the inside wall has had a weird damp smell since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate on the back wall. Between my kids' allergies and all the expensive clothes in there, I’m really worried. For a job this size in Dubai, should I just tackle this myself with bleach, or is this definitely a case for professional mold remediation, and what kind of cost am I looking at?

A patch that size, especially on an interior wall, suggests a moisture issue beyond surface condensation. In Dubai's climate, that damp smell likely indicates trapped humidity from a potential leak in the plumbing or AC condensate drain line within the wall cavity, or significant thermal bridging causing cold spots and condensation.

For a job this size, DIY with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall; it doesn't kill the roots (hyphae) and its high water content can actually feed the mold deeper within the wall. Disturbing it without proper containment could also spread spores throughout your home, potentially affecting your children's allergies.

Professional remediation is strongly advised. The priority is identifying and fixing the moisture source first—a specialist will use tools like thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact cause behind the wall. For remediation, they will set up containment barriers, use HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely remove and dispose of the contaminated drywall and insulation. Simply cleaning it is insufficient if the material remains wet.

The cost for professional remediation is variable, as it depends entirely on the investigation's findings. The final price is driven by the extent of the hidden damage and the complexity of the moisture source repair. You should request a detailed, on-site assessment to get an accurate scope of work and associated costs. Look for providers who can offer before-and-after testing to verify the space has been returned to a healthy baseline.
