Black mold behind wardrobe in humid Dubai room? Fix myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and the room always feels a bit damp even with the AC running constantly. What's the best way to deal with this in Dubai's humidity, and should I call a professional company or is this something I can handle myself with cleaners from Carrefour?

That's a classic sign of a humidity and condensation issue, very common in Dubai, especially on exterior walls or poorly insulated interior walls where cold air from the AC meets the warm, humid air. The wall behind the wardrobe is a perfect breeding ground because the furniture traps stagnant, moist air.
First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully assess the extent. For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mould remover. However, simply cleaning the surface is a temporary fix. The root cause is the excess moisture. You must improve air circulation behind the furniture—leave at least a few inches of space between the wardrobe and the wall. Use a dehumidifier in that room, as constant AC alone often doesn't remove enough ambient moisture. Given it's in your bedroom and the room consistently feels damp, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The mould you see on the surface is often just the tip of the iceberg; it can be growing within the wall itself, especially if there's a hidden plumbing leak or a breach in the building's vapour barrier. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source and take air/surface samples to identify the mould species, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. In Dubai's climate, this underlying issue will keep recurring until the source is professionally identified and resolved. |
