Can I remove this apartment mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit onto the wall in the second bedroom, and now I'm seeing a decent-sized black patch of mold spreading behind the wardrobe. It's been humid lately and I only just noticed it when I moved the furniture to vacuum. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

With the AC leak and visible black mold spreading, this requires professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation and high humidity can cause mold to penetrate deep into building materials, where surface cleaning is ineffective.

For a patch larger than one square meter, or any mold caused by an ongoing water source like an AC leak, DIY methods like bleach often fail. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure porous materials like drywall and concrete. The underlying moisture problem must be fixed first.

A certified mold inspector can use moisture meters to determine the full extent of the damage behind the wall and inside the AC unit itself, which is critical for proper remediation. They will also identify the mold species, as some types common in damp AC systems can be more problematic for air quality.

The remediation process itself involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms, safe removal of contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming—steps beyond a simple scrub. For an apartment, you'll also want documentation for your landlord or building management proving the issue was resolved to standard.

Given the leak source and size, calling a professional is the most reliable approach to ensure it's done completely and your indoor air is safe.
