How to clean and prevent bedroom mold from AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit, and now I’ve found black speckled mold along the base of the wall behind my bedroom wardrobe. It’s been so humid lately that the room just never feels dry. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself and what can I do to stop the mold from coming back for good?

The black speckled mold is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai due to the high humidity and AC condensation leaks. First, address the leak; this is the primary cause. Contact your building maintenance to fix the AC drain line or unit issue. Until it's repaired, the mold will return.
For cleaning a small area (under 1 square meter), wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Scrub the affected wall surface with this solution; vinegar is effective against many mold types and is less harsh than bleach. Allow it to dry completely. Do not simply paint over it, as the mold will regrow. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. After the leak is fixed, use a dedicated dehumidifier in that room, especially with the recent high humidity levels. Ensure the area behind the wardrobe is not blocked; furniture pushed against external walls in Dubai can create cold spots where condensation forms. Improve air circulation by periodically moving the wardrobe away from the wall and running a fan. For a recurring or larger problem, this indicates hidden mold within the wall or AC system. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and air quality testing is necessary to identify the full extent. DIY cleaning only addresses surface growth, not the root moisture problem or potential colonization inside your AC unit or wall cavity. |
